So, to start some discussion here, I was just wondering...what got you all playing EQ?
If you're a returning player after a long hiatus, how did you get into it originally and what made you decide to come back?
I'll weigh in on my story later since I'm working right now, just wanted to make this post while I was thinking about it and before I got any busier.

I first got into EQ through two friends that I worked with while a Navy recruiter. That was during the Ruins of Kunark expansion. I left EQ when I transferred back to the fleet because I didn't have the internet access. That was until last year. I came back because I missed the game and some of the people I met. I discovered that things in EQ had changed, but they weren't bad changes. I'm glad I came back, and joined the DDS.

I started by playing diablo when someone I knew at an old job told me all about eq and bought me a copy of the game I started playing and 2 weeks later he quit I been playing ever since. Though the game has lost it's shine in my eyes, I return because of the people many which has gave me an ear when I needed to vent and a laugh when I need to laugh. It's truely the people that makes this game and that my reason for doing what I do for the members here.

i started playing because this guy i work with got me into it. he said "you'll enjoy it". He didnt say "it will consume you". I quit playing after a few years when some other games came out. I got back into this game due to the same guy saying hey im playing again (he's a bad influence). Oh, btw you all know him as Rayar or Damyun.

Like Flik I got into the game (Planes of Power Expansion) while I was in the Navy. I talk a friend of mine (Elementofchaos)that was still stationed in San Diego into playing as a way to keep in touch. That account is 10 years old and on the Rathe server. I stopped playing after I retired in 2008, bad time to leave the Navy, and had to prioritize my spending until I found a job. I tried several other free to play games before checking one day to see if EQ was still up and running. That was 2 years ago I'm on a different account than before and my wife got me a 12 month subscription for Christmas.
Hann, I owe you an apology because I'm the one that got Rayar back in to the game.

An online friend I made was playing, and she got me into it back in 2001 or 2002, I don't remember which. I played pretty steadily for a few years and then I burned out and real life took over my life. I still have the very first toon I ever created, but she's on a different server, retired. And here I am, started anew and having a great time.

I was living in San Diego in the late 90s, working as an engineer, and my office was in the same building as the original EQ development team's office. I used to regularly go on smoke breaks with the EQ artists who designed all of the 'old world'! SO I heard all about this game prior to launch, and almost bit when it went into beta, but then I changed jobs and went to live in Japan instead for a while. Joined when I moved back to the states, played for several years, taking breaks now and again when needed for purposes of life balance (as we all know, the game can definitely consume you!), and still was burned out by around LDON time period. I went full Mac and Linux a few years back and wasn't able to access the game since that time (although I did a few months on the Al'Kabor Project classic EQ server - boy that was hard!), and just at the end of last year found myself missing EQ, so I picked up a cheap Windows desktop and, well, here I am. Like Mini said, I've always been delighted by the high quality people who play EQ - over the years, that's been the real draw for me.

I like how everyone says that the game can consume you. When I got my wife into playing, she renamed it EverCrack because we would be on for hours at a time.

I originally heard about the game near the end of college from a fraternity brother who was playing. He logged in once for me to see what it was about, but being a pretty poor college student, I didn't feel I had the money for the game and monthly fee. This was around Kunark. I originally started playing right after Luclin came out when a friend I waited tables with after college told me he was playing and we could play together. I played for a couple years I think then took a break, thinking it'd only be for a few months. Final Fantasy XI came out right after that, however, and I opted to jump into that with some other friends.
After my go at that for a year or so, I moved onto WoW. I was never really a fan of that one, there seemed to be little skill involved, although I think I played for a couple years before getting out as I had a couple friends playing and we were all in the same guild. After that I mostly played console stuff for a time.
I have come back to EQ a couple times over the years, but never seriously. I have a friend who played on a different server and usually coerce him into playing with me but it never ends up being long term. And now I am back again, having a great time so far, although I've mostly been moloing. Looking forward to getting some groups together in guild either for leveling or to assist anyone that needs some help with tasks.

I started just after the release of Velious and played until after the release of darkhollow. I first heard of EQ from some guy working at Gamestop. After leaving the first time I played Star Wars, LOTRO, Warcrap and Vanguard which if they did not screw it up, I would be still playing. I have been back to EQ and few times but did not play long. The game is easier now with mercs and other things. The new players have it made now. I remember playing my wizard and staring at a spellbook to get my mana up and wondering if a mob will come by to kill me, lol good times.

Way back at the beginning of Eq, my uncle showed me the ropes (we also played "the realm" which was also awesome). My brothers and I lived for this game. I remember at one point I had 100 or so days logged on. I believe I stopped playing after moving a few times. Anyway my cousin came over one day and mentioned that his dad, my uncle, still plays. He hooked me up with one of his 5 accounts. I played on his account for about 2 days before I realized I could play free. (Hard to justify to my frugal wife to pay monthly for a game) . Yesterday I had my brother download and I was able to help him get on his feet again. I'd like to get him into DDS soon. Well, that's it. Thanks for reading!
